The data shows that the boom is being driven by young adults aged 15-24.

Anyone can start a podcast with limited equipment and software, most of which is found pre-installed on any laptop.

Canadian music buff Adriel Smiley from Ajax, Ontario has a radio show and video channel using Spotify and YouTube.

He has since created quite the impressive portfolio, producing over 30 videos for his radio show ‘The Cool Table’ by utilising both Spotify and YouTube.

“It’s wild because before I started podcasting I didn’t think people would actually be interested in what I talk about,” Adriel said.

With podcasting numbers continuing to grow, the boom has prompted radio and TV broadcasters to expand their content.

The BBC has led the way by releasing on-demand podcast version of their most popular radio programmes.

Here's our pick of the top three podcasts you need to listen to:

1. Safe for Work - an advice show that reminds you that while your office may be crazy, you don’t have to be.

2. The Tip Off - taking you behind the scenes of some of the best investigative journalism from recent years.

3. The Football Ramble - London-based footy fans discuss the week’s most interesting games, gossip and drama. It's a must-listen for anyone who enjoys the entertaining side of the beautiful game.
