Everyone knows March has one of the year’s best excuses for a night on the town: St. Patrick’s Day. But not nearly as many realise World Kidney Day – a global campaign dedicated to raising awareness of the importance of two of our least-considered body parts– happens in the same month.


Kidneys are just one of a host of vital organs that can be wrecked by alcohol abuse, and men are significantly more likely to abuse alcohol than women. But what does the data show exactly? We break down the stats here.


· An estimated 77% of alcohol-dependent people in England are men

· Of the 279,000 people treated for alcohol abuse in England between 2016 and 2017, 69% were men


· Men are more than twice as likely as women to die from alcohol-specific causes in England


· Men in England are up to a third more likely than women to commit domestic violence while under the influence of alcohol
