It’s arrived: the best week of the horse racing year. But it’s more than just horse racing, Cheltenham has firmly established itself as a social event for more than just sports fans.
Here’s CTRL ALT's guide to the week ahead:
Why go?
It’s 2019’s biggest horse racing event and the best jumps meet in the sporting calendar. And if you have a good
week, your wallet will be overflowing with cash.
What to wear?
There’s no set dress code, but it’s basically tweed. Trousers, jackets, hats, brogues – all tweed. A Musto jacket is always a hit for those who feel the cold.
Where to eat?
The Daffodil offers a fantastic steak night and a mean sticky toffee pudding, as does Sri Lankan eatery The Coconut Tree. For a lighter eat, John Gordon’s offers a fantastic selection of pies and smaller bites. As in every town, the two Wetherspoons branches offer the usual selection.
More importantly, where to drink?
The Wild Beer Company offers a great pint, as does intimate venue The Fire Station. For a local ale, The Beehive is tucked away in the upmarket Montpellier area.
And lastly, some betting advice…
“There’s going to be 260,000 racegoers there, but make sure you visit the paddock before the race,” says Sophia Dale at Jockey Club. “Study the horses before you bet, that’s how you’ll win. Steer clear of the sweaty and agitated horses – that’s just throwing money away.”
